Wild Mushroom Foraging
An expert guide is needed to forage through the woods and find edible non-poisonous mushrooms. Thus far 5 people liked this idea: Cara (Me), Vadim, Elina, Leslie and Leslie. Edited by User 11,312,363 on Mar 17, 2010 6:24 PM |

They aren't free which can be an issue, but Shedd Aquarium has some great conservation programs. IE rightbite dinner series, green gardening series, etc. Def worth a look!

Thanks Joe for your suggestion.
It's personally one of my favorite places to visit having seen "The Komodo Dragon" only three times along with many other special and regular exhibits throughout the years. It can be costly at times but if something in particular piques the groups interest then it's something to consider. They do have some fabulous conservation programs with dedicated experts in this field. |

Think I may have mentioned this before, but this website has some things to do locally.
http://www.chicagoenv... We could pick one of the mentioned events for a meetup and also draw out a plan of our own to have fun. |

Additional comments/suggestions regarding future meet-ups.........
* Sara has expressed an interest in exploring more about urban farming/gardening. Anyone else??? There's plenty of programs/workshops on composting, rainbarrels, etc.....if there's enough interest. Note: I'm planning a "Community Garden Tour" where we will visit several projects. So stayed tuned... |

I'm very interested in urban farming/gardening. Let's definitely set up some meet ups! A community garden tour sounds like the perfect way to start. Keep us updated!

Didn't see this discussion before.
If you guys are interested in Wild Foraging, I might be able to fix something up. :) For the mushrooms, whether or not there will be any depends on how much rain area gets (if you have a dry spring, you may not find anything) but so far Chi-town is getting some rain so maybe there might be something! There are also other wild foods that will be available at different times of the spring, summer and early fall. (lots of planets that people think of as weeds are actually edible and tasty) But keep in mind sometimes you are not allowed to pick in certain places - like forest preservatives etc. Let me look into it and get back to you - if there are people who are still interested that is. :) |

Yay, Cara! The community gardening tour would be excellent!
In addition, I think it would be great to contact the City Farm in Old Town <<http://www.resourcece... and see if we could volunteer there as a (limited number) group someday. When I move into an apt closer to that area, I am planning to ask about volunteering on a regular basis. Anyone else like the idea of doing a CGE group day--or at least inquiring to see if they have enough for a group of us to attend to? In the meantime, keep us posted, Cara, on your tour!!! |

I am going for the screening of "Waste Land" playing Sunday @ 4:30 p.m at the Chicago International Film Festival.
If you're concerned with social and/or environmental issues or awestruck by junk art, this will be a feast for your eyes! Directed by Lucy Walker of "Blindsight" fame. In fact she will be making an in-person appearance at this screening. I don't think there's enough time to organize an impromptu meetup but let me know if anyone would like to join me! http://www.wastelandm... http://www.chicagofil... |
